Shine is an online English assessment used by businesses and higher education facilities to ensure that their applicants meet specific English language requirements.
The test includes five sections: listening, reading, grammar, writing, and speaking. The test is written online from anywhere.
The fee to write the test is $50. You can find payment information here.
Once your payment has been processed and you've been emailed the test link, you may write the test at any time. However, the link will only work once. You need to write the test in one sitting. The test must be completed within one hour and forty-five minutes.
Grammar: 20 marks Suggested time: 10 minutes. Students answer multiple choice and short answer questions related to grammatical topics like sentence structure, verb tenses, etc.
Listening 1 and 2: 20 marks Suggested time: 30 minutes. Students listen to two audio recordings and answer the comprehension questions that follow. Students can play the video as many times as they'd like while writing the test.

Academic Dishonesty Policy
Shine English Testing has a zero-tolerance policy regarding academic dishonesty. If an assessor deems that academic dishonesty has taken place, an automatic failing grade will be given and your academic institution will be notified.
Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, plagiarizing, looking up answers, having someone help you with the test and/or having someone write the test for you. If a failing grade is given for academic dishonesty, your academic institution will be notified. This may jeopardize your chances of gaining admission in the future.
If you are taking this test to satisfy admission requirements for Pacific Rim Early Childhood Institute, a passing score is 60/100. Your test results will be sent to Pacific Rim on your behalf.
If you do not pass the test, you must wait at least one month before you can take a retest. All retests must be written in an approved supervised testing centre. You must pay the Shine test fee again as well as the testing centre fee.
If you don’t pass the retest, you will need to take the English 12 Academic Upgrading Course offered by the BC Ministry of Education before you write the test again.
You can find information about the course here:
